NSF® H1 HIGH-PERFORMANCE FOOD GRADE LUBRICANTS

Lubricating today’s Food Processing equipment presents many of the same challenges found in non-food processing plants. Lubricants must protect against friction, wear, corrosion, heat and deposits. They must also resist degradation or impaired performance when in contact with food products, process chemicals, water (steam) and bacteria. But, perhaps most importantly, they must be safe in case they ever come in contact with the food. Sprayon High-Performance Food Grade Lubricants deliver the industrial strength you need to keep your equipment running at peak performance with the NSF® H1 Rating required to keep your food processing operation running safely.

OUR LUBRICANTS WON’T POP UNDER PRESSURE

The equipment in today’s food processing operations is subjected to extreme load pressures and the Sprayon NSF® H1 High-Performance Food Grade Lubricants Program features products specifically engineered to carry the load.

According to the Standard Test Methods for Measurement of Extreme Pressure Properties of Fluid Lubricants (ASTM D-3233A), lubricants that exhibit a 1,500 lbf are considered to provide sufficient protection against gear wear and scuffing under heavily loaded conditions. Our program features three (3) products that resist over 3,000 lbf including our LU104 Food Grade Penetrating Oil, LU205 Food Grade Chain Lubricant, and LU213 Food Grade High Temperature Lubricant.

The Sprayon NSF® H1 High-Performance Food Grade Lubricants Program was designed to perform in the most extreme pressure conditions to keep your equipment safely running at peak performance.

YOU CANT WASH THE PEEL OFF A LEMON, OR SPRAYON OFF EQUIPMENT

The water or steam ever-present in today’s food processing facilities can wash out and/or deteriorate lubricants, cause emulsions of greases and oil, cause rust and corrosion. The ability of a lubricant or grease to resist washout under extreme conditions is an important property in maintaining a good lubricating film. Sprayon’s NSF® H1 High-Performance Food Grade Lubricants features products that are engineered to resist the washout and deterioration that can occur from water or steam.

Our program features three (3) products which lost less than 5% of their weight under the Standard Test Method for Determining Water Washout Characteristics of Lubricating Greases (ASTM D1264): This includes our LU101 Food Grade White Calcium Grease (< 5%), LU207 Food Grade Synthetic Grease (< 5%)), and LU209 Food Grade Synthetic Oil (< 1.9%)).

With the superior resistance to water washout and deterioration, Sprayon’s NSF® H1 High-Performance Food Grade Lubricants will reduce your need for re-application through wash cycles and give you the confidence that your valuable equipment will be protected through the toughest conditions.

NOW YOU CAN HAVE YOUR CAKE AND THE NSF® H1 RATING, TOO.

For years, the Food Processing Industry was limited in its choice of lubricants. Many of the raw materials that make conventional industrial lubricants so effective are not permissible in food applications. On the flip side, the “food safe” lubricants were not very effective in addressing the challenges of the food processing environment (typically, white mineral oil was the “universal” choice for all lubrication applications). At Sprayon, we felt today’s Food Processor deserved better.

The Sprayon NSF® H1 High-Performance Food Grade Lubricants Program is formulated from the finest, food-grade base-stocks which are then treated with the most effective anti-oxidants, extreme pressure, anti-wear and corrosion protecting additives to address specific performance and application needs of today’s very broad and demanding Food Processing industry. And all have been NSF® Certified with an H1 rating so you can be confident that your food processing operation will be safely running at peak performance.

Sprayon High-Performance Food Grade Lubricants deliver the industrial strength you need to keep your equipment running at peak performance with the NSF® H1 Certification required to keep your food processing operation running safely.

JUST LIKE GARLIC BREAD, SPRAYON GOES FROM THE OVEN TO THE FREEZER.

Today’s food processing machinery and equipment are continuously subjected to extreme heat and/or extreme cold temperatures. Sprayon’s NSF® H1 High-Performance Food Grade Lubricants are engineered to perform under the most demanding temperatures. Our program features eleven (11) Lubricants rated higher than 280°F (138°C) continuously including our LU213 Food Grade High Temperature Lubricant which is rated to perform at temperatures as high as 635°F (335°C). The line also features ten (10) lubricants rated at less than 14°F (-10°C) continuously including LU214 Food Grade Low Temperature Lubricant which is rated to perform at temperatures as low -45°F (-42.8°C). From oven to freezer, Sprayon keeps your equipment running at peak performance.

WHAT NSF® H1 MEANS TO YOU

Currently in the US and other countries, National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) International, manages a voluntary registration program for non-food compounds and proprietary substances. These are products used in the processing and pre-processing stages of food production. NSF International launched this program to reintroduce guidelines previously established by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), such as formulation, label, and usage reviews. Products complying with these guidelines are issued a registration letter and carry the NSF registration mark on their label and related literature. Nonfood compounds with this mark assure food safety inspectors and end users that products used in and around food processing meet the appropriate food safety requirements – so they can avoid unsafe food and costly recalls.

NSF categorizes lubricants based on the likelihood they will contact food using the original food-grade designations developed by the USDA: H1, H2 and H3.

  • H3 lubricants, also known as soluble or edible oils, are used to clean and prevent rust on hooks, trolleys and similar equipment.
  • H2 lubricants can be used in places where there is no possibility of contaminating the food. Because there is no risk of contamination, H2 lubricants don’t have a defined list of acceptable ingredients, but there ARE some substances it definitely cannot contain.
  • H1 lubricants, however, are meant for food processing environments where there is some possibility of incidental food contact and their formulations may only be composed of one or more approved base stocks, additives, and thickeners.

For today’s food processor, knowing the difference between an H1 or an H2 lubricant is only half the battle. Selecting which is appropriate to use is not always a black & white decision. Starting in February 1998, the USDA implemented a Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) program where manufacturers had to assess risk at each point in the operation where contamination might occur.

For example, a lubricant used on a conveyor system running over a food line must be H1 since the lubricant could theoretically drip onto the food; however, a conveyor system running underneath a food line may be fine with an H2 lubricant. The decision on which is appropriate to use under the food line must be carefully scrutinized on the likelihood that the lubricant may ever come in contact with the food. As such, many food processors have taken the approach to “always” use an H1 lubricant to remove all doubt.

The Sprayon High-Performance Food Grade lubricants are not only designed to meet the diverse and demanding performance needs of today’s food processing industry, but they have all been NSF Certified with H1 Rating to give you the confidence of knowing our products will keep your operations safely running at peak performance.

All Sprayon NSF Registered Products are listed online in the NSF White Book™ (nsfwhitebook.org). To learn more about NSF Certification visit nsf.org or call them at 800.NSF.MARK.
